Looking for new and innovative ideas on new approaches to Street Tree Planting

Attention all municipal arborists involved with the management of your city, town or municipality’s urban forest This coming July at the ISA International in Chicago, yours truly is presenting a paper on “New Approaches to Plantings for Street Tree Plantings in the Urban area. I am in the final stages of completing my presentation but if anyone has any new or innovative ideas from their experiences in urban forestry,

please forward me your comments ASAP. We all know the current problems but is there the political will to change?

Big Trees on the Move Again

In early June, Maritime Landscape Services crossed the New Brunswick border again with its large Vermeer TS 84 Truckmounted Tree Spade for an emergency transplanting project at the University of New Brunswick campus in Fredericton. Due to major infrastructure work for a new Athletic Field House, 8 trees ranging from 7 inch to 4-inch caliper had to be moved in full leaf to new locations close by

6 inch Crimson King Norway Maple being relocated from Sir Howard Douglas Hall.

Despite some delays with mechanical problems with the spade and heavy rains, the transplanting was completed just prior to the excavators moving in to dig the trenches

6 inch Sugar Maple moving on

While on campus, our chapter vice- President Jim Urbanowsky dropped by to take a few pictures

Tree Tidbits

Arborists often debate the practice of transplanting larger trees because of establishment problems. The After-Care Program is key as evidenced by two 7-8 inch Lindens & 6 inch Norway Maple that are prospering and taking off well as of June 2010 after being moved to KenWo Golf course in the Annapolis valley in the spring of 2008 by a large Truck Tree spade.
